"Real" size models, beautiful brown girls, and tees emblazoned with political slogans were the many ways Prabal Gurung made a statement at his fall 2017 ready-to-wear show during New York Fashion Week.

In the wake of America's collective distaste for the current political climate, Gurung decided to shake up New York Fashion Week with a protest of his own, a protest that was decidedly fashionable.  From the subtle - bringing a much needed jolt of diversity to the runway, to the blatant - models defiantly strutting down the runway to women power songs like "Respect" and You Don't Own Me, Gurung went full out protest in a move that was beloved by all.

Nestled among smaller size women wearing beautiful chunky knits and colorful furs, cascades of ruffles and sexy fringe, Gurung inserted Candice Huffine and Marquita Pring, two "plus-size" models.  I hesitate to call them that because to me they look like average size women.

What stood out most to me is that the two women fit in perfectly.  Isn't it about time that these women be included in all runway shows?  Haven't we gotten the picture that they are beautiful, that they belong?

Gurung also booked several beautiful brown models, not just light-skinned, racially ambiguous girls, but brown women of all shades.

Throughout the show, the Prabal Gurung aesthetic was on display:  feminine dresses, bold colors with muted metallics, sharp suits and dreamy fabrics.

Then came his finale, where he sent a troop of models down the runway in statement making tees reading:  "Yes, we should all be feminists," "My boyfriend is a feminist,"The future is female," etc. before the designer himself appeared in his own protest shirt that read, "This is what a feminist looks like."

At a time where the political protest has become all too common, Gurung dared to ask, why not on the runway too?  And he did it in truly thoughtful, sophisticated way.
